Alcantara - beyond the wells

bridging cultures with music and art

A hardback book of vibrant paintings by Peter Lawrence and Zeina Barhoum complemented by poetry and prose by 10 authors on themes of:

Building bridges with music and art.

Alcantara is an Arabic word for bridge. The paintings range from Somerset to the Levant and the authors include, HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein (mother of Jordan’s King Abdallah), the Dean of Wells Cathedral, Patrick Lama (musician and composer of the world’s first Arabic opera), writers from Somerset and from UK nationals experienced in the Arab world.

The book was the idea of Sinan Sweis, Jordanian owner of the publisher, Jabal Amman Publishers, who has previously published books of Peter Lawrence’s paintings of Jordan with writings.  His idea was for a book bringing together the strengths and relationships between the UK and Jordan linked by paintings and writing as a concept of relevance to today’s political and social situation.
